The Sandside Art Festival
The Boatyard

Every artist ought to be an exhibitionist.

I  organized an art festival in the old boat yard on Sandside
over the weekend of the 10th and 11th of December 2011. The
ideawas to showcase the artistic talent that we have in the
Scarborough area. Also to inform the public of all the galleries
and art clubs etc in the area. With this in mind I have invited
several of the local art societies and clubs  ( Scarborough,
Ayton, Filey and Cayton )to exhibit and hope to get a lot of the
local professional and semi professional artists to exhibit also.
There was a group of work from the students at Westwood and
we  run a competition with all the senior schools in the area.
This was judged by Internationally famous Clive Head and
prizes were presented by The Mayor of Scarborough. This
was done on the preview evening, Friday the 9th of December.
One of the main things I wanted to achieve was a large
information desk with posters and leaflets advertising The
Galleries in the area. I  asked all the local galleries for posters
and leaflets to promote their galleries.  I  also asked for
volunteers to man the desk and tell people about the galleries
etc in the area.
I received help and advice from a wide spectrum of the art
community in Scarborough area.  Especially from Helen
Birmingham from the Studio Gallery in Belle View Parade and
we get press and radio coverage to bring in a lot of people to
Scarborough over that weekend. The exhibition was a great
success with about 4000 people through over the weekend. A
good many pieces were sold.
With a lot of people's help we brought to the Boatyard, the
large sculpture titled Fredie Gilroy and the Belson Straglers by
artist Ray Lonsdale. Ray's Gallery The Arts Bank from Saltburn
brought a larg selection of work including five large sculpures
by Ray Lonsdale. Ray was on hand all weekend to talk to the
public.
